The course is aimed at teachers of English as a subject or teachers teaching through the medium of English working in mainstream learning contexts. It is suitable for both primary and secondary teachers and not just for SEN specialists.

The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teacher Development course is aimed at providing support to teachers in any mainstream educational context where inclusion, diversity and support to learners with special or additional needs is required. The course is aimed at a non-SEN specialised teacher audience and is focused on
a) raising awareness and understanding of the learning challenges which can come from a range of SEN areas;
b) providing practical classroom strategies which can support learners with SENs and good learning practice for all learners.
The course has been written for an audience whose native language is not English but the content is intended to be informative and challenging for teachers in any context – including native speakers of English. The course takes a broad approach to SEN covering 10 different areas based on a social model of disability. The topics covered are:
- visual/hearing/physical impairment
- social, emotional, behavioural difficulties
- gifted and talented
- multicultural impact on learning difficulties
- language and speech
- inclusive assessment
Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of each unit.
