Access information below to support your child's learning at home during semester 2 of Primary Infants 1. 

Unit 7: Wild animals

IN THIS UNIT CHILDREN WILL COVER:

  • wild animals (giraffe, hippo, elephant, crocodile, monkey, snake, tiger)
  • body parts (arm, foot, feet, hand, leg, tail)

THEY WILL PRACTISE:

  • naming wild animals
  • describing wild animals: 'They’ve got big ears. They haven’t got a tail.'
  • asking about wild animals: 'Have they got long noses?' 'Yes, they have.' 'No, they haven't.'

YOU CAN PRACTISE WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME IN DIFFERENT WAYS. YOU CAN:

  • Point at the animals in the pupil's book and ask your child what they are.
  • Mime animals or make animal noises and get your child to guess what animal you are: 'What am I?' 'An elephant?'
  • If you can, visit a zoo, point at the animals and ask your child what they are in English: 'What's this?' 'It’s a lion.' Alternatively, you can do this with toy animals or pets at home.
  • Ask your child to describe one of her favourite cartoon characters or toys to you and you have to guess what they are, e.g. 'He’s got blue eyes and black hair.' 'Superman?'

Unit 8: My clothes

IN THIS UNIT CHILDREN WILL COVER:

  • clothes (T-shirt, skirt, jacket, shoes, socks, trousers)

THEY WILL PRACTISE:

  • describing clothes: 'It’s a green T-shirt.' 'They're blue socks.'
  • describing their favourite clothes: 'My favourite socks are purple.'
  • saying what clothes they and other people have got: 'I’ve got a pink skirt.' 'He’s got red trousers.'

YOU CAN PRACTISE WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME IN DIFFERENT WAYS. YOU CAN:

  • Point at the clothes in the pupil's book and ask your child what they are.
  • Ask your child what clothes they and other members of your family have got: 'What have you got?' 'I’ve got a red T-shirt.' Alternatively, you can ask them what the members of the Starr family have got on different pages of the pupil's book.

Unit 9: Fun time!

In this unit children will cover:

  • free time activities (play the piano, play tennis, play football, play basketball, play the guitar, swim, ride a bike)
  • 'can' and 'can’t' ('I can ride a bike.', 'I can’t sing.')

They will practise:

  • matching verbs with nouns (ride a bike, play football)
  • saying what they can or can’t do ('I can’t sing.', 'I can ride a horse.')
  • asking each other what they can do ('Can you swim?' 'Yes, I can.' / 'No, I can’t.') 

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Point at the activities in the pupil's book and ask your child what the characters are doing.
  • Ask your child what they and other members of the family can do ('Can you play the guitar?', 'Can Dad sing?').
  • Play a mime game: you mime an activity and your child guesses what you are doing. Take turns.

Unit 10: At the funfair

In this unit children will cover:

  • vehicles (car, lorry, bus, helicopter, plane, boat, motorbike)
  • the present continuous ('What are you doing?' 'I’m flying / driving / riding / walking.')

They will practise:

  • naming vehicles ('What's this? It’s a motorbike.')
  • matching verbs with nouns (drive a car/lorry/bus, fly a plane/helicopter, ride a motorcycle)
  • using prepositions ('Where's the train?' 'It’s under/on/next to/behind/in front of/in the box.')
  • saying what they are doing at the present moment ('What are you doing?' 'I’m walking.')

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Point at the vehicles in the pupil's book and ask your child what they are ('What's this? It’s a motorbike.'). 
  • Look at the picture on page 71 in the pupil's book and ask your child where the transport toys are in the bedroom ('Where is the yellow lorry?' 'It’s in the box.').
  • Get your child to mime a vehicle and ask them what they are doing ('What are you doing?' 'I’m riding a motorbike.')

Unit 11: Our house

In this unit children will cover:

  • rooms in the house (bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, hall)
  • free time activities children do at home (colour a picture, draw a monster, play video games, listen to music, read a book)
  • the present continuous ('What's he/she doing?' 'What are they doing?' 'He's / She's / They're ...ing.')

They will practise:

  • saying and asking which room each character is in ('Where's Suzie?' 'She’s in the bedroom.')
  • saying and asking what other people are doing at the present moment ('What's he/she doing?' 'What are they doing?' 'He's / She's / They're ...ing.')

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Point at the characters on page 78 or 81 of the pupil's book and ask your child where they are and what they are doing ('Where’s Grandpa?' 'He’s in the living room.' 'What's he doing?' 'He’s sleeping.') - this could also be played as a memory game with the book closed. 
  • Ask your child where other members of the family are and what they are doing ('Where's Dad?' 'He's in the kitchen.' 'What's he doing?' 'He's cooking dinner.').
  • Ask your child to draw a house with different people or animals doing different things in different rooms, and then tell you about it.

Unit 12: Party time!

In this unit children will cover:

  • party food (apple, ice cream, banana, chocolate, cake, burger, orange)
  • the verb 'like': 'I (don't) like…', 'Do you like…?' 'Yes, I do.' 'No, I don’t.'

They will practise:

  • naming party food ('What's this?' 'It’s a cake.')
  • saying what food they like and don’t like ('I like chocolate. I don’t like burgers.')
  • asking each other if they like something ('Do you like oranges?' 'Yes, I do.' / No, I don’t.')

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Point at the characters on page 84 of the pupil's book and ask your child what they are eating ('What's Mrs Starr eating?' 'She’s eating an apple.' 'Is Mr Starr eating a banana?' 'No, he isn’t.') - this could also be played as a memory game with the book closed. 
  • Point at the animals on page 85 of the pupil's book, make true and false statements about what the animals are eating in the zoo, then ask your child to correct you ('The snake is eating a cake.' 'No, he isn’t. He’s eating an apple.').
  • Ask your child during meal times or at the supermarket what food they like ('Do you like bananas?' 'Yes, I do. / No, I don't.').
  • When cooking, for example making a pizza or a cake, ask your child what ingredients they would like to add ('Do you like tomatoes on pizza?' 'Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.').
