Medea, Written in Rage
By Jean Rene Lemoine / Translated, adapted, and directed by Neil Bartlett
The story of the murderous sorceress Medea and her love for Jason was already old when ancient Greek playwright Euripides turned it into a tragedy in fifth-century Athens. She has since been reincarnated many times, but in all versions, Medea is talked about by other characters, and is roundly judged for her crimes - by men, by women, by her parents, by Jason and (of course) by the audience. In Jean-René Lemoine's new telling of the story, which was first staged in Paris in 2014, Medea appears alone. Her wardrobe and her words may draw on several of her earlier incarnations, but this time the legend is very definitely speaking for herself.
